What is he talking about? There is a scene in one episode of Friends: Joey and Chandler are watching the strange thing on Ross’s ass. Just then, Rachel enters and sees what they are doing. The guys are stunned. In order to ease the awkwardness, Chandler says, “Ok, well, it’s definite, two more weeks of winter.” Could you please tell me what he means? Thanks!

February 2nd is Groundhog Day. The tradition is that the groundhog comes out of his hole on this day. If he sees his shadow, he is scared and returns to the hole - which means we have six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, he stays out - meaning winter is almost over. Joey and Chandler are trying to explain their way out of a very embarrassing situation by pretending they are looking at a hole for a very different reason than the real reason. Many words in English have more than one meaning, and many jokes use this double meaning. Also, please don't judge our culture from the content of TV shows. Many of us are embarrassed by the declining standards of civility that are spread throughout the world. It isn't truly representative of our nation's culture. Hollywood's culture perhaps, but not ours.
