“对得起”: 对人无愧,不辜负 英文翻译: not let sb. down; treat somebody fairly; be worthy of: 比如:我想会对得起你的等待的 = I think it will be worth the wait 反正我对得起你。= At any rate, I haven't let you down. 但是 我遇到这个句子: 我们要对得起这些路灯 = 按照他们的英文翻译:we have been tempting to pay for these street lights. 。 We want to not let down these street lights

the best answer is a wrong answer. it means "don't waste the already provided resources"

Maybe someone did something wrong or damage to the street lights and was required to make up for it. The lights did not been treated as light. I am curious about the story. Nevertherless, you need not pay much attention to this pharase, cause no one use it that way. You can search it online for some mandarin webpage, and there is no such use.

"we have been tempting to pay for these street lights." This is not a direct translation for "我们要对得起这些路灯" but more of paraphase. Here "对得起" still means "not let sth down" The full meaning of this sentence:"we shouldn't let down the effort of paying for these street lights because it has been so tempting, so we should make good use of it."
