Does anyone know where to get a good Tagalog grammar book or web site?
I would like to learn more about the different types of verbs (i.e. "um" verbs, "mag" verbs ...) and how use them in future, present and past tense. I would like to learn more about the many Tagalog prefixes that are used in so many words. I have trouble looking up Tagalog words in a Tagalog - English dictionary because the first letter of the word is for a prefix and the word is organized based on the spelling of the root word.

Hi Chris.
here is a website which i think could help u learn tagalog. http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Tagalog/Tagalog_mainpage.htm
About the verbs, we use "um" and "mag" depending on the words or verbs that we will use.
I think its really important if u will know first the verbal focus coz tagalog has a complex verbal system. (which u can also learn in the website i have mentioned).
"Um"- we use this as infix or letters placed in the middle of the word
eg. kain (eat) kumakain(present), kakain(future), kumain(past tense)
"mag" we usually use this for future tenses
eg. luto(cook) nagluluto(present), magluluto(future), nagluto(past)
Hope u will enjoy learning tagalog!
Hope to hear from u soon.
Bye.
