How does one interpret this sentence? It was barely perceptible, that noise. I still hear it sometimes. Sound is a funny thing, and smell. I’ll light a fire in the back lot of my cabin after the sun goes down. Then after a while, the smoke settles down into little ruts between clumps of pine. How does one interpret this sentence: settles down into little ruts between clumps of pine? What does "rut"mean in this sentence? Thanks!

Smoke settling does seem somewhat of an image to be reckoned with. . A rut is a hollow, a hole, a depression of some shape.
