What does "a massive shorting" mean?
When they analyzed the stock market after 9/11…
…they discovered a massive shorting of airline stocks.
When the stocks hit bottom on 9/12, somebody made a fortune.

To short means "sell (stocks or other securities or commodities) in advance of acquiring them, with the aim of making a profit when the price falls" (source: oxforddictionaries.com).
So, a "massive shorting" is such a sell, but done on a very large (e.g. massive) scale.
