Please explain ""When she invited them to have a piece , they refused with a shy elaborate politeness that made her want to take them in her arms. "" I don t understand clearly the phrase "shy elaborate politeness "" . Can anyone explain ? Thanks in advance

If you are looking for an equivalent phrase, it could be "abashed politeness" or "embarrassing politeness" but then this too is not standard I guess.

Using words like "shy elaborate politeness" the writer is trying to emphasise or stress as to how polite the refusal was. The very fact that the writer wanted to take them in arms show that the writer was touched.

It's not a standard phrase. I recommend just combining the ideas expressed by each of the three words -- in order to form a picture inside your mind of what the author is describing.
