"He took an elevator up **to** the room."

This is also OK:
"He rode an elevator to the upper floor and then went into his room."

This is less common but it's OK, if you want to focus on the idea that he went by elevator (and not by the stairs):
"Then he went up by elevator and came into the room."

I'd agree that 'took' is the most usual. In British English, we'd say 'I took the lift'.
