I learned how to read and write hiragana in just two days. All I did was learn how to write it properly first (where should the first stroke go?) and then I tried to remember what does that character mean like this ''まお、ありがとう <Mao, thank you> and I always bring my printed copy on how to write hiragana at katakana and tried scribbling it anywhere!
