I'll use my secret weapon to answer: talk in the student's mother tongue =o)
Yo te quise, como nunca mas van a quererte: I loved you as no one else will ever love you.
(quise is in prét. indefinido here, hope this is clear)
Te quería tanto, que hubiese dado la vida por tí: I used to love you so much, that I would have died for you.
(mind the 'used to', instead of 'loved', for 'pret. imperfecto de subjuntivo).
Quería comprar un auto, pero sólo me alcanzó para una moto (I wanted to buy a car but I could only afford a motorcycle).
*** mind the fact that the action of wanting lasted for a while, so we use prét. imperfecto subj.
Cuando todos llegaron, lo primero que quise fue salir corriendo (When everyone arrove, the first thing I wanted was to run away).
*** mind the fact of wanting once, and that's it (finished), and also the 'wanting' happens in the middle of another going-on action which also takes place in the past, so we use the prét. indefinido.
So, 'querer' can be used in this way, for loving, and for wanting, also sometimes will express wishes: Quiero lo mejor para ti (I wish you the best).
Hope it's clear :)
Have a nice day,
Alejo.
