we say / vado a/ in this kind of circumntances:
-- la macchina di mio fratello va a elettricita` (works with electricity)
-- questo aereo va a kerosene
-- vado a dormire
no: vado a biblioteca
si`: vado alla biblioteca centrale di Roma
no: vado a libreria per comprare un libro di fisica.
si`: vado alla libreria Rizzoli per comprare un libro di fisica.
Not with /vado a biblioteca

The correct one is vado in biblioteca
The reason ?
Probably because you use IN where the emphasis is on WHERE you go.
If the emphasis had been on WHY you went there than it would have been A.
e.g. Vado IN biblioteca A prendere un libro.
