On the first one, your expression made sense (but you would probably need "was"). Something more informal and natural could be:
"Thanks for introducing me to him/her - he/she is a good choice"
Your second phrase is very natural and expressed perfectly. When you are referring to a non-physical feature, you could say:
"they take after their father / mother"
The easiest thing to say in every situation is "he is just like his father" / her eyes are just like her father's". I like your expression better.
"Spicy" is not negative, just descriptive. If a dish had too much of any spice (including chillis), then it would be "too spicy".
