have or did This is a rather basic question.. Why do we usually ask our friends "Have you received my mail?" instead of "Did you receive my mail?" ? What I am thinking is that in this context "receive" happened in the past, so I become kind of confused.

In real life, especially in the US, we often do ask our friends "Did you receive my mail?" The reason why the present perfect is considered to be better is that there is a connection to the present, that is, you want to know if your friend is aware of the email's contents now.
