I agree, very similar in usage. Nevertheless is used to say 'despite this' ex: His English is already brilliant, nevertheless, he attends regular lessons. The cake is horrid, nevertheless, I am going to eat it. However is more to give a contrary idea His English is however brilliant, however, he could still improve. The cake is horrid, the chocolate however, is delicious. Hope that helps, Anna

'Nevertheless' is used when we want to say that despite one action, we are still going to do/not do the other. For example 'John's car was stolen again, nevertheless, he was going to buy another one.' 'However' is used in different situations where there is a bit of surprise in the outcome. For example John's car was broken into, however, they couldn't steal because it had an immobiliser.' Hope this helps a little.

The words are synonyms, but "nevertheless" is stronger, more emphatic.

"Nevertheless" and "however" are both adverbs commonly used in the sense of "despite this" or "on the other hand." For example: "It's beautiful. Nevertheless, we simply can't afford it." "I think you're right. Nevertheless, I can't support your plan." "It's common to gain weight as we get older. However, many seniors manage to stay fit by remaining active." "I work long hours and my job is very stressful. The good salary, however, makes up for it." It's not easy to come up with a simple rule for when to use one word over the other, since they're quite similar. People usually go with whichever one sounds better in a given sentence. Note that "however" also has a second meaning, "in whatever way." For example: "You can do it however you want to, as long as you do it!"
