what is diffference between "on the news" and " in the news"?

'On the news' usually refers to a news television program, eg: "I saw a report about the president's visit on the news."
'In the news' is broader, and can refer to any type of news outlet - TV, radio, newspapers etc, eg "There's a lot of discussion about the president's visit in the news today."
