My personal view is that talk shows are not good teaching or learning material. By all means watch talk shows for entertainment, or to keep track of topical issues, gossips and trends, but don't expect them to improve your English. I don't think talk show hosts hold themselves out to be role models for good English either. I would be quite appalled if I was a teacher of English, or an employer, or a mentor for a Ph.D. student, if a student talked like a talk show host. If you must learn English from television, you would learn better English by watching something like "Downtown Abbey" or even "House of Cards".

I don't think there is a general standard for everyone. It's based on which level you are on. Keep trying.
