Let me try to translate the two phrases:
1. "mucho gusto" -> "nice to meet you"
2. "Encantada de conocerte" -> "glad to meet you"

I use the first one in any situation when I meet new people.  But the second is when I meet personaly someone who I'd interested to meet, I mean someone from whom I heard. I actually refer to a personal emotion of being glad

Si, es verdad que tienen el mismo significado...pero yo  utilizo más a menudo encantada de conocerte porque suena más natural y a la vez formal.  :)
