without hope in a situation... something near to end in a bad way (for example a relationship... alla frutta... you can do nothing anymore)
frutta is the last dish in a dinner or in a launch... this is the reason you have the concept of end...
it's informal... an ideomatic expression....
other...
dolce come il miele (sweet like honey)... for something sweet... also for people...
testa di rapa (turnip head)... a stupid person... it's an offense... not good to say...
è buono come un pezzo di pane (to be good like a slice fo bread)... a good healt... a good person make good things...
come i cavoli a merenda (like cabbage at meal... at breakfast... merenda... is a break in the middle of the day where you eat something... i don't have the word)... it mean you say something completly wrong.. or you wear something is not pendant... in this case is like "pugno nell'occhio"..

Chi ha i denti non ha il pane e chi ha il pane non ha i denti
Who has teeth has no bread and who has bread has no teeth
It means: who has aspirations it does not have the means to realize them, while those who have the means has no aspiration to realize.
Dire pane al pane, vino al vino
Say bread to bread wine to wine
It means To say clear.
