Ludus is from the Latin.
This looks like maybe it's part of a Ph.D dissertation.

It is not clear. Probably both but then goes onto say "is" which suggests you are looking for only one. I conclude that I have no idea. I would have to ask the author.
The whole sentence is just so unclear, it has either been writen by a non-native or by someone who wants to ensure zero clarity. Interesting challenge. Even if there is some obscure grammar rule that explains this, I suspect the majority of natives would no know for sure.
