How would you interpret the last two sentences? 1 How would you interpret ‘posted the numbers’ and ‘18.50’ in the second to last sentence? Does the ‘numbers’ in the ‘posted the numbers’ refer to the numbers as ’18.50’? Or does it refer to the numbers of the horses? And what’s the meaning of ’18.50’ here? 2 How would you interpret ‘a ten-lira bet’ in the last sentence? By the way, they bet 100 lire on that horse. Thanks. It’s from A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway (Chapter 20). the context: "Who did you children bet on?" Mrs. Meyers asked. "Japalac." "Really? He's thirty-five to one!" … "He won't pay much," Meyers said. "He's marked thirty-five to one in the quotes," I said. "He won't pay much. At the last minute," Meyers said, "they put a lot of money on him." … "Let's go down and get a drink and see what they pay," Crowell said. We went out to where they posted the numbers and the bell rang to pay off and they put up 18.50 after Japalac to win. That meant he paid less than even money on a ten-lira bet.

1. At race tracks, the payout for a winning horse is posted on a board. That is what is meant by "numbers." It is the payout if that horse wins. I do not know anything about Italian race tracks, but in America the numbers are either written as something like 6/1 (meaning you get $6 for every $1 you bet) or something like $14.20 (which means you get $14.20 for every $2 (why $2, I don't know...) you bet). To me, 18.50 *looks like* the profit paid out for every 10 lire a person bets. So if you bet 100 lire on that horse and it wins, you get a profit of 18.50 * (100/10) = 185 lire. Again, I am not sure how Italian race tracks work, but it is clear that 18.50 is the payout or the odds, and "the numbers" (in "posted the numbers") refer to all the payouts/odds for all the horses competing. 2. A ten-lira bet means simply that. A bet of 10 Italian lire.

It doesn't mean much to me - you may need someone who knows about racing to answer it. Here - the odds you get offered when you bet are fixed at that time, and don't change.
