Does the word "ground" follow the normal rules when it's an uncountable noun? Have I to say (talking in general) "ground is always frozen at a certain latitude" or "THE ground is always frozen at a certain latitude"?

It's "the ground" because we consider the surface of the earth as a unique thing, in everyday parlance.
