Do you want a shorter way of saying it, or do you want help understanding it? I don't think you can rewrite it, without losing either information, or the visual picture/analogy that the writer is making. If you don't care about the puzzle analogy, then you could delete that bit. We would need to know what you want, before we can suggest ways to edit it.
