Lie and line
J: Of course, it was a line
M: why would anybody do something like that?
this is a conversation between J and M.
My question is does line have the same meaning here as lie?
can "it was a line" be instead of "it was a lie"?
Thank you for your help.

‘Lines’ are what an actor must read, learn remember and say in their acting roles. Actors of course do not mean what they say when they speak these lines. It’s acting.
I’d need more context, but it seems that ‘line’ here is meant as something practiced, rehearsed and not genuine in its delivery - a practiced lie.

Yes. In this context, line means lie.
