if the important thing is the TIME of the action, you use simple past tense. In your example "I went"
But if the action is more important than the time you use present perfect tense "I have gone"
I am going to clean the blackboard.
What am I going to do?
You are going to clean the blackboard.
What am I doing now?
You are cleaning the blackboard.
Am I still cleaning it?
Yes, you are still cleaning it.
Have I cleaned the blackboard? (Present Perfect Tense)
Yes, you have cleaned it. (Present Perfect Tense)
What have I done? (Present Perfect Tense)
You have cleaned the blackboard. (Present Perfect Tense)
How is the blackboard now?
It is clean.
When did I clean the blackboard? (Simple Past Tense)
You cleaned it one minute ago. (Simple Past Tense)
