"同事" is more like "colleague". Anyway the word should be chosen according to the context. For classmates you would use "同学". It's logical: people who do business together with us, people who study together with us. Words often don't match exactly... There are often several chinese characters that correspond to one of our words, even for words that correspond to concrete objects or well-defined notions. For instance, a polygon is either "a shape with many sides" or a "shape with many angles". Then you choose the word according to what you want to insist on.

In my opinion, "同志" is a phrase out of date. Because people born after 1980 almost never use "同志" again in living. Most of time, "同志" means gay.

The word "同志" with the meaning "comrade" is not used in daily life of most Chinese people. In my view, there are three condision are suit for this word, with the meaning "comrade". First, you are talking with your closest friends and wants to say something funny, you can say this word, better with some smile on the face~~(You know what I mean~~).Second, you are talking with Communists in a very very offical condision, this word is OK~~Third, you want to say something about homosexual~~You can use "同事" in all the other condision in place of "同志"when you want show the meaning "comrade"
