Salam Jacob! The simple answer (written Farsi) is this: Since تعطیلات is a *اسمِ معنی, and that it is an Arabic plural (تعطیل+ ات), when used as the subject, the verb will be in singular form. So the correct form is number 2. *The word “تعطیلات” is in a special group of names, called “اسم‌های معنی” that I think getting into the details of the definition of this group would just make it really complicated for you since it’s an advanced topic full of exceptions :”/ . But in spoken you can use both forms and it would sound natural. BTW تعطیلات is not an inanimate word because here’s the definition of inanimate words in Farsi: Things that CAN BE SEEN, but do not grow and do not move by themselves. As for your second question, I should say there are certain rules for inanimate plurals but they are very detailed and complex and I believe can’t be explained here! Unfortunately the plural topic in Persian is a bit hard! But the good news is that even natives make mistakes in them all the time! So don’t worry you’ll get the main rules little by little ;)
