I was born and raised in Northern Germany in the City of Kiel on the Baltic Sea with a love for languages. In my early twenties, I decided to study English and German in the U.S.A. I have lived and worked as a language instructor in the U.S. for over 25 years. I have travelled to Germany every year to visit friends and family. It is important to me to stay connected with the culture and the language that I love to teach and speak. I have also lived in England and Belgium and am currently located in Lyon, France with my husband and my rescue dog EV from Cyprus. In my free time, I read, play my guitar and go on long walks. I have also taken language classes in French and Dutch.

講師としての私
I studied English at a U.S. university and have a masters degree from Georgetown University in German literature and linguistics. I have worked as a language instructor for 35 years, teaching college, young professionals and GED. I also have a CELTA certificate from Cambridge University to teach English as a second language to adult learners. I feel passionate about teaching languages and I believe that education is a gift that keeps on giving. I enjoy engaging my learners and opening up new worlds, and helping students achieve new goals. I have also spent many hours volunteering as a teacher in more vulnerable communities, such as refugee classes and have taught online lessons during Covid.
レッスンおよびティーチングスタイル
I don't follow one particular teaching method. I consider the learner's particular needs, their learning style and I try to find out what's most effective. I prefer a student centered approach. Activities are chosen to work on all four language skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing). Communication and discourse is an important part of my teaching but I also take other systems into account such as grammar, pronunciation and learning vocabulary. Everything is connected. Thus we might have a discussion about time and read a text about the importance of being on time in English or German society which might lead to a lesson on telling time or idiomatic expressions.

Ich habe eine wunderbare Zeit mit Monika! Sie ist sehr freundlich und geduldig. Jedes Mal, wenn ich etwas falsch spreche, korrigiert sie meine Fehler. Sie schickt mir auch sinnvolle Hausaufgaben. Ich glaube, dass sich mein Deutsch mit ihrer Hilfe sehr verbessern wird. Ich freue mich darauf, sie beim nächsten Mal zu treffen.🥰

Monika is a very good and prepared teacher :)
During her lessons you never get bored. I got on well from the first day. Tranks to the teaching material she provides, I always have homework that motivates me.
We do grammar, but we also read news or articles that interest me the most. And we talk a lot.
She is always available for clarification and empathises a lot with the student.
I made a lot of progress this year also thanks to her.
I look forward to continuing together. Thank you very much :)
