I only teach adults. On italki I have had the pleasure of working with many students to practise and improve their English. Some of these have just been relaxed chats and some have been a little more structured preparation for English exams. From time to time I have helped students to review and edit written work for university assignments, presentations etc. I have received a great deal of training in phonics and the teaching of reading and writing, and have a lot of experience teaching grammar.

Stop practicing English. Start using it clearly in real conversations. My approach is based on using the language in context, so you’re not just learning rules or random vocabulary, or talking about things that don’t interest you. You focus on what you care about and on finding ways to say what you want to say. This comes from my own experience. Once I had the basics, I struggled to improve because I relied on memorizing rules out of context and vocabulary I didn’t actually use. I lost sight of what learning a language is really about, communicating with other people. Things changed when I started speaking more and learning through real situations. When I could see how everything connected, it became much easier to understand and use.
