Learning Pinyin tones with words — Four and a half tones

Hold it steady and high, like singing a single clear note 🎵. Imagine your voice is “flatlining” — no dip, no rise, approx. 3.5 pitch level.

1st Tone — 冰 (bīng, ice)
•	冰咖啡 (bīng kāfēi = iced coffee)
•	冰水 (bīng shuǐ = ice water)

Starts mid and rises upward, like asking “What?” or “Really?” Practice with "uh-HUH?” — Starts soft ends loud

2nd Tone — 人 (rén, person)
•	美国人 (Měiguó rén = American person)
•	中国人 (Zhōngguó rén = Chinese person)

Traditionally: low dip, then rise ⤵️⤴️. In practice, it’s often pronounced just low and short (the rise gets skipped).  Soft throughout.

3rd Tone — 我 (wǒ, I/me)
•	我是医生 (wǒ shì yīshēng = I am a doctor)
•	你喜欢我 (nǐ xǐhuān wǒ = You like me)

Starts high and drops sharply ⬇️, like saying “Stop!” or “No!” Use a strong, decisive voice — almost like giving a command. Imagine a guillotine blade dropping — clean and quick, loud at the end.

4th Tone — 去 (qù, to go)
•	我们去了西安 (wǒmen qù le Xī’ān = we went to Xi’an)
•	去学校 (qù xuéxiào = go to school)

ASMR whispering, light and quick, without emphasis. No clear pitch contour, it just “follows” the tone before it. Think of it as a “soft echo” — like murmuring under your breath.

Neutral Tone — 的 (de, structural particle)
•	好吃的菜 (hǎochī de cài = delicious dish)
•	我的书 (wǒ de shū = my book)
•	好的 (hǎo de = okay / got it)
