Today I’m going to talk about elephant at zoo. An article of News Paper said that the number of elephant at zoo has decreased for this two decades. There are only 25 elephants at Japanese zoo. What happens at zoo? And I’ll talk about my memories of zoo. Thank you!

『ゾウがいなくなる？』 “Elephants at zoo will disappear in Japan”
動物園にはどんな動物がいるかな？と考えると、頭に浮かぶのは「ゾウ、ライオン、キリン、パンダ、ペンギン」などです。　世界中の珍しい動物たちが動物園にはいますよね。もともと日本にはいない動物を　動物園では見ることができます。ところが、先日　新聞に「アフリカゾウ消えゆく国内」という記事を見つけました。　その記事には、日本国内の動物園のゾウたちにも高齢化が進んでいる上に、オスが少ないためにゾウの赤ちゃんが生まれないと書かれていました。それで、この20年間に日本の動物園にいるゾウの数は半分にまで減って、今25頭しかいないそうです。　
ゾウと言えば、その長い鼻をホースのように使って水浴びをしたり、餌を口に運ぶ姿を思い浮かべるのではないでしょうか。大きな体で　のんびり動く姿を眺めていると癒される人もいると思います。そんな動物園のシンボル的存在のゾウがいなくなったら、寂しいですよね。　最近は動物園に行くこともほとんどありませんが、子どものころは学校から遠足や写生会でよく行きました。　私がよく行った動物園は神戸市にある王子動物園です。　小学校から写生会に行ったときのことを今でもよく覚えています。　何年生のときだったかは覚えていませんが、私はカバの絵を　水性絵の具で描きました。カバはあまり動かないので描きやすいと思ったのですが、水の中に入っている時間が長いので、実はカバを観察するのは難しかったです。そして、カバの色を絵の具で作るのも難しかったです。大きい画用紙から、はみ出るぐらい大きくカバの姿を描いた記憶があります。残念ながら、その時描いた絵は手元にありませんが、楽しい思い出が詰まった動物園。　桜が満開になるこの時期にまた足を運んでみたいと思います。
