原来，在小王子的星球上就象其他所有星球上一样，有好草和坏草；
Indeed, as I learned, there were on the planet where the little prince lived–as on all planets–good plants and bad plants.
因此，也就有益草的草籽和毒草的草籽，
In consequence, there were good seeds from good plants, and bad seeds from bad plants.
可是草籽是看不见的。
But seeds are invisible.
它们沉睡在泥土里，直到其中的一粒忽然想要苏醒过来
They sleep deep in the heart of the earth's darkness, until some one among them is seized with the desire to awaken.
于是它就伸展开身子，开始腼腆地朝着太阳长出一棵秀丽可爱的小嫩苗。
Then this little seed will stretch itself and begin– timidly at first–to push a charming little sprig inoffensively upward toward the sun.
如果是小萝卜或是玫瑰的嫩苗，就让它去自由地生长。
If it is only a sprout of radish or the sprig of a rose-bush, one would let it grow wherever it might wish.
如果是一棵坏苗，一旦被辨认出来，就应该马上把它拔掉。
But when it is a bad plant, one must destroy it as soon as possible, the very first instant that one recognizes it.
因为在小王子的星球上，有些非常可怕的种子
Now there were some terrible seeds on the planet that was the home of the little prince;
这就是猴面包树的种子。
and these were the seeds of the baobab.
在那里的泥土里，这种种子多得成灾。
The soil of that planet was infested with them.
而一棵猴面包树苗，假如你拔得太迟，就再也无法把它清除掉。
A baobab is something you will never, never be able to get rid of if you attend to it too late. It spreads over the entire planet.
它就会盘踞整个星球。
It bores clear through it with its roots.
它的树根能把星球钻透，如果星球很小，而猴面包树很多，它就把整个星球搞得支离破碎。
And if the planet is too small, and the baobabs are too many, they split it in pieces.
“这是个纪律问题。”小王子后来向我解释道。
"It is a question of discipline," the little prince said to me later on.
当你早上梳洗完毕以后，必须仔细地给星球梳洗，
"When you've finished your own toilet in the morning, then it is time to attend to the toilet of your planet, just so, with the greatest care.
必须规定自己按时去拔掉猴面包树苗。
You must see to it that you pull up regularly all the baobabs,
这种树苗小的时候与玫瑰苗差不多，一旦可以把它们区别开的时候，就要把它拔掉。
at the very first moment when they can be distinguished from the rosebushes which they resemble so closely in their earliest youth.

안녕하세요! 
오늘은 한국에서 많이 쓰이는 단어, [갓생]에 대해 이야기해 보려고 해요. 혹시 들어본 적 있으신가요? 
갓생은 단순히 유행어가 아니라, 한국의 문화와 삶의 가치를 담고 있는 단어예요. 이와 관련된 재미있는 표현들도 함께 소개해 드릴게요!

갓생 (God-Life)
갓생은 영어 God와 한국어 '생'의 조합이에요. '생'은 삶을 의미하죠. 그래서 갓생은 생산적이고, 규칙적이며, 목표를 달성하는 "신적인 삶"을 뜻해요. 예를 들어, 매일 아침 일찍 일어나 운동하고, 공부하고, 계획한 일을 모두 이루는 사람을 보면 "정말 갓생 산다!"라고 말할 수 있어요.

"나는 이번 주도 갓생 살기로 결심했어."
I've decided to live a productive life again this week."
한국 사회는 자기계발과 성실함을 중요하게 생각하는데, 갓생이라는 단어가 그런 문화를 잘 보여주고 있죠.

갓반인 (Ordinary Person)
그런가 하면, 갓반인이라는 단어도 있어요. 이것은 "갓"과 "일반인"의 조합인데요, 일반인은 평범한 사람을 뜻해요. 주로 덕후, 즉 팬덤에 푹 빠진 사람들이 자신과는 다른 평범한 사람들을 표현할 때 사용해요.

"나는 덕후로 살다 보니 갓반인이 너무 부럽다."
"As a passionate enthusiast, I sometimes envy ordinary people."
이 표현은 덕후들 사이에서 자조적이면서도 유머러스하게 사용된답니다.

머글 (Muggle)
머글은 Harry Potter에서 온 단어로, 팬덤이나 특정 취미와 관계없는 사람을 뜻해요. K-pop 팬들이 자주 사용하는 표현이기도 해요.

"내 친구는 완전 머글이라 내가 덕질하는 걸 이해 못 해."
"My friend is a total muggle, so they don’t get my fan obsession."

현생 (Real Life)
마지막으로, 현생은 현실 생활의 줄임말이에요. 현실 세계의 책임이나 일 때문에 취미나 팬 활동에 집중할 수 없을 때 주로 쓰이죠.

"요즘 현생이 너무 바빠서 덕질을 못 하고 있어."
"I'm too busy with real life these days to indulge in my fandom."
이렇게 다양한 표현들이 한국의 대중문화와 일상 속에서 쓰이고 있어요. 여러분은 지금 갓생을 살고 계신가요? 아니면 현생 때문에 바쁜가요?

HOTEL RECEPTIONIST: Hi, there. How can I help you?
CLAIRE: Well, I’m in town visiting for a few days, and I 
need to get some things done while I’m here.
HOTEL RECEPTIONIST: Sure. What do you need?
CLAIRE: I need to get my hair cut. I also need to have my
new pants hemmed.
HOTEL RECEPTIONIST: OK. Here’s a map of the city. There’s a good hair 
salon here, which is just a block away. And there’s 
a tailor right here. Is there anything else?
CLAIRE: Yes. I’ll need to have my car serviced before my
long drive home!
HOTEL RECEPTIONIST: No problem. There’s a good mechanic a few 
blocks away.


LANGUAGE NOTES
• Hi, there. Notice the intonation in this greeting. It rises after “Hi” and falls after “there.”
• Sure is a friendly expression to mean “OK.”
• Get my hair cut / have my new pants hemmed / have my car serviced. Notice get/
have + object + participle. This structure is used to describe actions that someone else 
does for us. “Get” and “have” are interchangeable here.
• Is there anything else? here means “Do you need more information?”
• Before my long drive home! Notice the emphasis and intonation on “home.” The 
speaker wants to show humor here. If she doesn’t get her car checked, she might not get 
home! She wants to be friendly and light with the receptionist.
• No problem here means “Don’t worry.” Notice the stress on “No.” The receptionist 
laughs first, then puts emphasis on “No” by lengthening the word. This shows that she 
understands the car could break down if it doesn’t get serviced
