You'll also learn what to do if your language learning has stalled, bad habits language learners pick up when learning a language in a traditional classroom setting, reductions and linking, and how to improve your English skills by joining a movie club. Here are a couple of excerpts from our conversation: "The irony is that it's usually the words that you already know that cause the most problems." "People resent it (the English language), and I understand that because it's imposed on a lot of people, and obviously, we can't expect everyone to be excited about learning it. So I totally understand those feelings, which are valid. I think then, if you can't get excited about English, what can you get excited about? What interests you, in general?"

La vita a Torino della signora Lucia


La signora Lucia vive nel centro di Torino nel quartiere del quadrilatero romano. Lavora da casa come traduttrice dal cinese all’italiano e ama molto cucinare. Proprio per questo motivo ogni giorno va al mercato di Porta Palazzo a fare la spesa. Lei ama passeggiare tra le bancarelle che vendono tanti prodotti alimentari differenti: adesso che è Gennaio lei compra della verdura di stagione come broccoli, cavolo nero, carciofi, finocchi, zucca, porri, rape e cavolfiori. Uno dei suoi piatti preferiti è un tortino di cavolfiore con uvetta, besciamella e noce moscata. Dopo aver fatto un giro nel reparto della frutta e verdura, la signora Lucia va nella zona del mercato coperto dove si trovano le pescherie e le macellerie. Dal pescivendolo compra delle cozze, delle vongole e qualche gamberetto, per preparare al marito Gilberto uno spaghetto allo scoglio. Poi in macelleria compra della carne macinata di vitello e di maiale, per preparare delle polpette di carne che ama tanto suo figlio Alberto. Alberto studia a Torino all’università del Politecnico, ma ogni domenica a pranzo preferisce tornare a casa dei suoi genitori per pranzare con tutta la famiglia. Lucia poi dal suo pizzicagnolo preferito, acquista della ricotta fresca di pecora, del parmigiano grattugiato, del pepe macinato e del pane grattato oltre a delle uova biologiche allevate a terra, ingredienti che andranno a essere la base di una torta salata di ricotta e spinaci che preparerà per sua figlia Maria. Maria è una studentessa del quinto anno di scuole superiori ed è vegetariana quindi la madre prepara per lei piatti buoni e senza carne.
