Pronunciation Clinic for English Speakers — The Six Sounds That Give You Away in Malayalam
설명
Class 186 — the full pronunciation clinic for native English speakers, and the honest assessment nobody gives you.
If English is your first language you have the weakest starting position of any learner in this course. Word order: unfamiliar — English is subject-verb-object, Malayalam is verb-final. Postpositions, agglutination, a case system, retroflex consonants, contrastive aspiration, meaningful vowel length, gemination, relative participles, the dative-experiencer, inclusive and exclusive we, a negative verb — all absent from English. That is why the US Foreign Service Institute puts Malayalam in its hardest category, alongside Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean: roughly four times the study hours of French or Spanish. When you find this hard, you are not failing. You are doing a category-four language.
The compensating fact is large: you already speak the language Kerala's educated population speaks. You will never be stranded — the cost is that you must force yourself off that safety net.
Then the clinic — six sound problems, ranked by how much damage they do to comprehension, each with a physical fix you can practise today:
1. The retroflex series. Dental ത ദ ന against the teeth; retroflex ട ഡ ണ with the tongue curled back. English t and d sit between the two, so Malayalis hear you as wrong in both directions. പട്ടി (patti) is a dog; പത്തി (patthi) is a snake's hood.
2. Aspiration. English aspirates automatically — pin vs spin — and you cannot hear it because it never changes meaning. In Malayalam ക/ഖ, ഗ/ഘ, ത/ഥ, പ/ഫ do. Fix: a strip of paper in front of your mouth.
3. Vowel length. അ vs ആ, ഇ vs ഈ, ഉ vs ഊ — duration, not quality. കല (kala) art vs കാല (kaala) of time; മല (mala) mountain vs മാല (maala) garland.
4. Gemination — കല്ല് (kallu) stone vs കല് (kal).
5. ഴ, the retroflex approximant in മഴ (mazha) rain and in Kozhikode — a sound found in Malayalam and Tamil and almost nowhere else on earth.
