설명
This is about a word you have already met a dozen times without ever being told what it really is: ആയി (aayi). Start with a distinction English handles clumsily and Malayalam handles beautifully. ആണ് says what something IS. ആയി says what it BECAME — the same world, one moment later, after something has shifted. ഞാൻ റെഡി ആയി I got ready — I am ready now ഞാൻ ലേറ്റ് ആയി I got late അവൾ ചാമ്പ്യൻ ആയി she became champion ഭക്ഷണം റെഡി ആയി the food is ready — literally, the food has become ready ആയി marks a completed transformation. The state was one way; now it is another. And that is why ആയി is itself already a past form — "became" — even though the result usually still holds as you speak. This one word powers getting ready, getting hungry, getting late, getting scared, and finally understanding something. It is one of the busiest words in the language. ACROSS THE TENSES Completed change: ആയി · negative ആയില്ല · question ആയോ? · tag ആയില്ലേ? Further past: ആയിരുന്നു · negative ആയിരുന്നില്ല Future: ആകും · negative ആകില്ല — and in relaxed speech you will hear ആവും for ആകും Probable: ആയിരിക്കും · negative ആയിരിക്കില്ല THE DIVISION YOU MUST HOLD ON TO These two look almost identical and mean completely different things. അവൻ ഡോക്ടർ ആകും — he WILL become a doctor. A prediction about his career. അവൻ ഡോക്ടർ ആയിരിക്കും — he is PROBABLY a doctor. A guess about a stranger in a white coat. Same man, two completely different sentences. ആകും is a real future; ആയിരിക്കും is an inference. Quizzes below. Dr. Reshmi R Nair — SpeakMalayalam.
