Ein Horrorbuchstabe für jeden Deutschlerner, obwohl dieser Buchstabe ein Lebensretter ist. In der modernen deutschen Sprache wird das „ä" meistens mit einem „e“ ersetzt. Doch es gibt manche Wörter, die eine richtige Betonung erfordern:

Zum Beispiel:
Ehre = engl: Honor
Ähre = engl: ear of wheat

Viel Spaß beim Zuhören, Erkennen und Mitmachen:

Lena lebte in einem älteren Häuschen am Rande eines märchenhaften Tals. Jeden Morgen zählte sie die Vögel, die auf den Ästen der Bäume saßen. Eines Tages bemerkte sie, dass ein Käfig fehlte, den sie draußen stehen gelassen hatte. „Wer mag den Käfig genommen haben?“ fragte sie sich.

Plötzlich hörte sie ein seltsames Geräusch hinterm Fenster. Ein Kätzchen spielte mit einem Bändel, der am Käfig hing. Lena lächelte, nahm das Tierchen sanft auf und brachte es ins Häuschen. Nun teilte sie ihre Mahlzeiten nicht nur mit Vögeln, sondern auch mit dem kleinen, frechen Kätzchen.

Jimmy ha deciso di andare al ristorante per provare alcuni piatti tipici italiani. Appena entra il cameriere gli dice: “Quanti siete?”
Jimmy risponde “sono solo.”
Il cameriere gli chiede “ha fatto la prenotazione?”
Jimmy non ha fatto nessuna prenotazione, ma domanda se c’è un posto libero.
“Certo, prego, si accomodi” gli dice il cameriere e poi lo accompagna a un tavolo in un angolo. “Ecco qui il menù”.
Jimmy legge il menù: il suo italiano ormai è abbastanza buono e riesce a capire quasi tutto. In Italia ci sono tantissimi piatti da assaggiare: ci sono gli antipasti - che sono degli spuntini prima del pasto vero e proprio. Ci sono i primi piatti, che comprendono pasta, riso o zuppa. Poi ci sono i secondi piatti - carne o pesce - che di solito vengono accompagnati da un contorno di verdure.
Infine ci sono i dolci e tanti vini.
“Ha deciso?” gli chiede il cameriere.
Jimmy è pronto: “Sì, come antipasto vorrei assaggiare prosciutto e melone.”
“Ottima scelta”, commenta il cameriere. “E per primo?”
“Per primo vorrei un risotto alla pescatora: cioè un risotto con i frutti di mare. E per secondo un’orata al forno - che è un altro tipo di pesce - con contorno di patate.”
Il cameriere scrive tutto: “Perfetto. Da bere cosa prende?”
Jimmy risponde “un cappuccino, per favore.”
Il cameriere guarda Jimmy scioccato: “In Italia non beviamo mai il cappuccino con il pranzo. Anzi, in Italia non beviamo mai il cappuccino dopo le 11 di mattina!”
Jimmy ne chiede il motivo.
Il cameriere spiega “Il latte lo beviamo solo a colazione. Latte e cibo salato insieme non fanno bene allo stomaco. Con il pesce è meglio un calice di vino bianco.”
Jimmy pensa che gli italiani siano davvero strani! Però ordina un bicchiere di vino bianco e si gode il suo pranzo.

RYAN: I’m so happy this week of midterm exams is finished.
TYLER: Same here. I’m looking forward to relaxing in the mountains 
this weekend. I’ve planned a little hike in the woods. 
And I’m gonna take a canoe trip down the river if the 
weather cooperates.
RYAN: Oh, fun! I’m going to Michigan. I’m taking my camera 
because fall is coming fast. The leaves are already turning 
all shades of red and orange. It will be awesome.
TYLER: Next time you go there, I’ll join you. I’ve heard Michigan is a 
great place to go canoeing


LANGUAGE NOTES
• Midterm Students at universities in the United States often take exams midsemester, 
around October or March of every year. These exams are called midterms. Exams at the 
end of the semester are called finals or final exams and are usually in May.
• Gonna is a colloquial form of “I’m going to.” Other similar constructions include 
“wanna” [want to] or “hafta” [have to]. These are examples of transcriptions of spoken 
English and should not be used in a formal context. Some of these examples are now 
seen in text messages as a means of shortening sentences.
• Awesome: is a colloquial way of saying “excellent,” “cool,” “great.” Last night’s rock 
concert was awesome
