Future and Polite Requests in Malayalam — Part 4: Will, Let Us, Could You, Must | Learn Malayalam #6
설명
Three small endings let you plan, invite and ask politely, which is most of what social life is.
This early survival class gives you the regular future ending (പോകും, വരും) and its negative, the warm നമുക്ക് form for 'let us', and the same ending turned into a polite question with -ആമോ. You hear why Malayalam has no everyday word for please, how ഒന്ന് softens a request, three levels of 'come' on one verb, and must with പോകണം and വരണം. There is also a short note on why English 'will' is not really a future tense.
Words and phrases in this class:
പോകും (pokum) – will go
നാളെ ഞാൻ വരും (naale njaan varum) – tomorrow I will come
മഴ പെയ്യും (mazha peyyum) – it will rain
നാളെ ഞാൻ വരില്ല (naale njaan varilla) – tomorrow I will not come
നമുക്ക് പോകാം (namukku pokaam) – let's go
നമുക്ക് ചായ കുടിക്കാം (namukku chaaya kudikkaam) – let's have tea
നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഇരിക്കാം (ningalkku irikkaam) – you may sit
സഹായിക്കാമോ? (sahaayikkaamo?) – could you help?
വാ (vaa) – come (blunt)
വരൂ (varoo) – come (softened, everyday)
വരാമോ? (varaamo?) – could you come? (polite)
ഒന്ന് പതുക്കെ പറയാമോ? (onnu pathukke parayaamo?) – could you say it a little slowly?
എനിക്ക് പോകണം (enikku pokanam) – I have to go
In this class:
• The regular future, and its negative
• നമുക്ക് പോകാം: the invitation with the listener already inside it
• -ആമോ requests, ഒന്ന് as your please, and three levels of 'come'
• Must with പോകണം, and why the person goes in the dative
