Наклонив бледное, бородатое лицо с двумя розовыми выемками по бокам носа, с которого он осторожно снял цепкое пенсне, вытирая глаза ладонью, воспитатель начал говорить первым, сказал, что мальчик мог бы учиться лучше, что мальчик, кажется, не ладит с товарищами, что мальчик мало бегает на переменах… «Способности у мальчика несомненно есть, — сказал воспитатель, покончив манипуляции с глазами, — но наблюдается некоторая вялость». В это мгновение где-то внизу родился звонок, перекинулся наверх, невыносимо пронзительно прошел по всему зданию. После этого были две-три секунды полнейшей тишины, — и вдруг все ожило, зашумело, захлопали крышки парт, зал наполнился говором, топотом. «Большая перемена, — сказал воспитатель. — Если хотите, сойдемте во двор, посмотрите, как резвятся ребята».
