 "The Umbrella Man" is  a great short story by Roald Dahl, who was a very famous British writer. I will read Part One to you and then highlight some key vocabulary. I guarantee you will be excited to hear Part Two next week.

みなさんは「さっき」という言葉を聞いたことがありますか？「さっき起きました」「さっきまで勉強していました」など、「さっき」とは少し前という意味です。昨日より前に起こったことは「さっき」とは言いません。
では、「さっき」より前のことはどう言いますか？いつのことかを覚えている場合は「先週友達とご飯を食べました。」とはっきりとその時を示した方が分かりやすいと思います。いつのことか覚えていない場合は、「前に」や「この前」、「以前」などを使います。
例えば「前に会ったことがあります」「この前はじめてお寿司を食べました」「以前この場所に来たことがあります」と言います。ちなみに「前に」や「この前」、「以前」はニュアンスがそれぞれ少しずつ違うので自分で例文を作って練習したり、日本人がどのように使い分けているかを注意して聞いてみてください。
