Hello. This is my podcast episode 30. I didn't have time to upload it last week. I was a bit busy. Finally, it's the 30th episode. The details of the webinar I told you about last time, which I will be hosting, have been finalised. It will be on 20 June from 10am to 10:45am Japan time. It is aimed at Japanese teachers, so all slides and conversations will be in Japanese. If you are interested, you are welcome to attend. It will be available on Youtube after the delivery, so you can watch it on another day other than on-air day.

こんにちは。今日は7月1日月曜日、皆さん、「5分でわかる日本語」ポッドキャストへようこそ。私は日本語の先生、みわです。今日は信号機の色についてお話しします。信号機は、道を安全に歩いたり、安全に車が走るために道にあるものですね。

信号機の色、知ってますか？

信号機の色は青と赤と黄色です！でも、青の信号は実際には緑色に見えますよね？なぜ日本では信号の色を「青」と言うのでしょうか？今日はその理由について詳しくお話しします。

まず、信号機の色について確認しましょう。
信号機には三つの色があります：
	•	赤：止まれ
	•	黄色：注意
	•	青：進め

では、どうして青信号は実際には緑なのに、青信号と呼ぶのでしょうか？実は、これは日本語の歴史と関係があります。

昔の日本語では、「青」という言葉は今より広い意味を持っていました。青という言葉は、今の「青」と「緑」の両方の意味があります。

例えば、「青りんご」という言葉があります。青りんごは実際には緑色ですね。でも、昔から日本語ではこれも「青」と呼んでいます。また、「青菜（あおな）」も緑色の野菜のことをいいます。

さらに、「青々とした木」という表現もあります。変に思えますが、変ではありません。これは、木の葉がとても緑で元気が良いことを意味します。例えば、「青々とした木々が広がる森」という風に使います。このように、緑色のものを「青」と表現することは、昔から日本語でよく見られることです。

ですから、信号機の緑色も「青」と呼ばれるようになったのです。

ここで、皆さんに問題です。なぜ日本では信号の緑を「青」と呼ぶのでしょうか？
	1.	昔の日本語では、青という言葉にも緑の意味が入っていたから
	2.	信号機の色が昔は青だったから
	3.	信号機の色を決める人が間違えたから
正解は「1. 昔の日本語では、青という言葉にも緑の意味が入っていたから」です。
