커뮤니티 튜터Hello everyone! As part of my short series on British history for more advanced learners, here is another short insight.
In today’s world, where underground transport systems are a normal part of daily life, it is easy to forget that this idea had to begin somewhere…
The World’s First Underground Railway (1863)
In 1863, London became the first city in the world to open an underground railway. The line, which ran between Paddington and Farringdon, was built to reduce the severe traffic congestion on the city’s streets.
Constructing a railway beneath a busy city was a major engineering challenge. Large sections of road had to be dug up and then covered again after the tracks were laid - a method known as “cut and cover.”
Perhaps most surprisingly, the first underground trains were powered by steam. This meant that the tunnels were often filled with smoke, making journeys uncomfortable for passengers. Despite this, the railway was an immediate success, carrying tens of thousands of people each day.
Over time, the system expanded and improved, eventually becoming the modern network we know today as the London Underground.
The creation of the underground railway reminds us that many aspects of modern life begin as bold - and sometimes imperfect - experiments.
