Imagine that it is almost Christmas. A husband (John) and his wife (Anne) each want to visit their own parents on Christmas Day. To compromise means that neither person will get exactly what they want, only part. Usually, compromising is an agreement that two people make because both people see this as reasonable. John and Anne may compromise by agreeing to visit John's parents for dinner, leave early, and then visit Anne's parents for desert. They will go to both parents' homes and stay only half as long as they could. To concede means to give up fighting about something and let the other person have what they wanted. Suppose that John and Anne have been arguing about the problem for two weeks. They are now angry every day when they see each other. Anne has gone to bed crying many nights. She has been sleeping in the guest bedroom instead of with John in their own bedroom. John may concede and tell Anne that he is willing to visit her parents this year instead of his parents, so that they can both stop being angry and be happy again. By conceding, John gave up fighting to get what he wanted. To appease someone means to try to make them less angry or upset or sad. John may want to continue to convince Anne to visit his own parents on Christmas Day. He may try to appease Anne by suggesting that they visit Anne's parents on Christmas Eve. He hopes this will be enough to get what he wants but also make Anne less angry. To reconcile means to fix a problem after it has already happened. It usually means that people realize they were wrong. Suppose John demands that he and Anne visit his own parents on Christmas Day. They go. Anne has been very angry since Christmas. John realizes that he was wrong to demand to go to his own parents. He is sorry. He may try to reconcile with Anne by apologizing and admitting he was wrong to demand his own way. He may tell her that he understands why she is angry and ask her to forgive him. He wants to fix the problem from Christmas.
