What is adolescence? It begins when you are aged between about 10 to 13 and it is a period of rapid physical changes, which transforms you from pre-teen child , dependent on your parents, to independent young adult, who you become in your early twenties.
Here are some common social and emotional changes, which happen during adolescence.
Freedom. You may not spend as much time with parents as you used to. You want more freedom to choose who you want to see and when. You may feel your friends are as important as your family.
Privacy. You were most happy in company of your parents. You need your own space and some privacy.
Interests. You have new interests and they can include activitites, which your parents don`t understand or think that it is waste of time, such as playing computer games or chatting on internet.
Decisions. In the past, your parents made most decisions for you and told you what to do. You probably risent on them when they told you to go to bed, tidy your room, or come home by 10 o`clock.
Opinions. When you were younger, you didn`t have much strong opinions. Adolescents are often idialistic and feel unpatient and at odds with adults world. you can feel you have all answers while many adults don`t have any!
All of these changes are perfectly normall, but it is important to remember that they affect your relationship with your parents and they may be source of conflicts and arguments.
So what can you do to make life easier and make sure that you stay on good terms with your parents?
Firstly, your parents will feel themselves much better if you let them know that you still love and value them. Remember, they have lost their child forever who you once were.
