The simplest and most common uses are roughly equivalent to "obtener" or "llegar." Like many short words--in English OR Spanish--it has an incredible variety of uses. Here are examples of the most common, simplest use.
"We have no bread. I need to get bread."
"Claudia Goldin just got the Nobel Prize!"
"Who will get the Oscar for 'Best Actor?'"
Another use is "to become."
"After an hour of exercise, I get tired."
"You've slept too long! Get up, get out of bed, get dressed, and get going!"
Unfortunately there are more than a dozen phrasal verbs with "get." These just have to be learned as if they were individual words, because they have special meanings of their own.
