May: How was your son’s mid-term exam result?
Lin: He didn’t do well in math exam.
May: How come? I thought he is good at math.
Lin: His arithmetic is ok, but he has some problem in reading the words problem. He couldn’t comprehend the long Chinese sentences very well, especially when it includes some tricky questions.
May: It seems that nowadays many students’ Chinese competence is getting worse. I think it’s partly because that the parents emphasize English too much. A lot of kids go to cram school or have on-line class to improve their English. Apart from class time, they have to spend time in reading English books.
Lin: Ya, you‘ve got a point there. My son basically reads more English books than Chinese books. I was kind of aware of this situation, so I tried to find some interesting Chinese novels for him, but so far only a very few Chinese books could arise his interests. I agree with him that the English novels we’ve read so far are more exciting and interesting. I found that many Chinese children books tend to have morals behind the stories, but what attracts boys most is the story that is full of funny or crazy things.
May: I agree with you. Maybe you can try some translated books, I know a book series translated from Japanese, whose name is Detective Zo, is super fun to read.
Lin: Really?I’ll check it out. I hope the translation quality is good, so that my son’s Chinese reading could improve when he read it. Thank you for recommending it.
