Let’s explore one of the most common Polish prepositions: do.
It usually means "to", "into", or "until", depending on the context — and it's always followed by the genitive case.
1. Going to a place
Use do when talking about going or moving to a location.
Examples
Idę do sklepu. – I’m going to the store.
Jedziemy do Warszawy. – We’re going to Warsaw.
Pójdę do szkoły. – I will go to school.
2. Going to a person
Use do when visiting or going to someone.
Examples
Idę do mamy. – I’m going to mom.
Jadę do kolegi. – I’m going to (my) friend.
Dzieci poszły do nauczycielki. – The children went to the teacher.
3. Time expressions – until
Use do to express time limits.
Examples
Pracuję do piątej. – I work until five.
Sklep jest otwarty do 21:00. – The store is open until 9 PM.
Będę tu do jutra. – I’ll be here until tomorrow.
4. Purpose, belonging, or direction
Use do to show that something is meant for someone/something, or belongs to it.
Examples
Klucz do mieszkania – Key to the apartment
List do ciebie – Letter to you
Instrukcja do gry – Instructions for the game
