전문 강사🕰️ El pretérito imperfecto en español
We use the pretérito imperfecto to talk about how things were in the past, not about what happened.
It describes:
habits
customs
background situations
what was going on
👉 It is like the present tense, but in the past.
🔹 When do we use it?
We use the imperfect when we talk about:
1️⃣ Habits in the past
Cuando era niño, jugaba en la calle.
Los domingos íbamos al parque.
2️⃣ How things were
La casa era grande.
El barrio era tranquilo.
3️⃣ What was happening
Ayer a las ocho estudiaba.
Mientras ella cocinaba, yo leía.
🔹 Compare
Imperfecto → how things were
Pretérito indefinido → what happened
De niño vivía en Madrid. (background)
Un día me mudé a Valencia. (event)
⚠️ Common mistake
❌ Cuando era niño jugué en la calle todos los días.
✅ Cuando era niño jugaba en la calle todos los días.
🎯 Key idea
Use imperfecto for:
how things were, not what happened
Cuando era niño, ___ al parque todos los días.
fui
iba
he ido
voy
