I was studying Spanish today, because I have an exam tomorrow. Spanish is difficult! Using progressive past here makes more sense, since you were studying for some time. Although simple past (studied) isn't necessarily grammatically incorrect, progressive past (was studying) sounds a bit more natural. Good job!
