My mentee – who worked for Gucci – was leading negotiations with their global headquarters. In English. There are only three women like her in the world (OK, I’m joking – but very few). I asked her to repeat it because I thought I’d misunderstood. She wasn’t joking. She genuinely felt that way – specifically about the part of her job that required speaking English. That day, I stopped trusting people’s self-assessments at face value.
