If someone yelled at me and then this person says "Forgive me please! It won't happen again etc"... So I always used to say "I am sorry you!" I mean "I am sorry you = I forgive you". Today I was in the same situation, someone stepped on my toe on the bus. It was very painful. Eventually the man apologized and of course I said "I'm sorry YOU". By the way he looked at me I understood that he got puzzled by my response. Isn't it correct to say "I'm sorry YOU!" If not what other colloquial ways to say this are there? Thank you so much!

No, "I'm sorry you" is not correct and it's completely confusing. I wouldn't know what you meant. It isn't a normal English phrase. Some natural replies would be: "It's OK." "It's nothing." "Don't worry, it's OK." "Don't worry, it's nothing." If you had yelled "Ow!" or "Ouch," you could add "I'm fine." "Don't worry, I'm fine, it's OK."

When using "I'm sorry", it's "I'm sorry" or "I'm sorry for..." / "I'm sorry that...". Examples: "I'm sorry for your loss." - Someone died "I'm sorry for what I said." -Maybe you yelled at your friend "I'm sorry that you can't come." - Maybe you invited someone to your party but they can't come "I'm sorry that happened." - This is usually said when someone is telling you about something that happened to them and you feel bad for them

So we don't say "I'm sorry you". It doesn't make sense. We also would not say "I forgive you" in situations like where someone apologizes for something small and accidental. Instead, you can say: "It's okay" -This means something like "It's okay, I forgive you" without sounding too formal. "You're fine" / "you're good" - This means something like "you are not bothering me or harming me too much and I know it was an accident and I appreciate that you are apologizing"
