It is weird. I have never heard it called that before. Nothing that will upset anyone but a little odd.

No, it's not weird! If you asked for someone for "aluminum paper" they might be a little confused, but after a second's thought they would know what you meant. They might smile and ask if you meant "aluminum foil." If they make a big deal out of it they're just being jerks.
