Here are a couple of thoughts and practices: At first I was afraid, that AI would put me out of work as a teacher. But then I realized that it will just change my role as a teacher. And give me more space to do what I enjoy the most, helping my students figure out how to get to their goals in a faster and more enjoyable way. And as all the tools of the past, like textbooks, exercises, spaced repetition, the currently available AI-Tools can serve several purposes in the learning journey. For the beginning stages, my goal for my students is to be able to get into conversation as soon as possible. For some students this can be super challenging, especially if they're afraid of making mistakes in front of another person. Here is where AI can help. In the past I had my students write out a question and answer style conversation as homework, getting them to practice skills that will help to lead a conversation. But they had to wait until the next lesson to get feedback on their homework. Now, students can use tools like DeepL Write or ChatGPT (starting from version 4.0 it's about 95% correct) to get instant feedback. There will still be questions on the corrections, and we can use these to inform what to focus on next in the lesson: e.g. Is there a grammar principle that is unclear or needs more practice? And I still like to keep students active while getting AI corrections, so here is a really simple practice I recommend: Create a table with two columns, writing the first draft in the left column and putting the AI-corrected version in the left. And then the most important step: Let the student actively analyze the difference. Learning still takes place in the brain of the student. This way, we can add some fun exploration to the constructive part of the language learning process, which in my experience is the most important if your goal is to use the language to converse and build relationships with real people.
